How do we know the church belongs to Christ?

Answered in 2 sources

The church is established by Christ, who is its head and builder, as affirmed in Matthew 16:18.

The ownership of the church by Christ is grounded in the assertion that He is its foundation and builder as stated in Matthew 16:18. When Jesus declares, 'upon this rock I will build my church,' He emphasizes that the church's foundation is the revelation of Christ Himself. This signifies not only that He sovereignly creates and organizes the church but also that He governs and sustains it. Furthermore, Colossians 1:18 states, 'And he is the head of the body, the church,' indicating that all authority within the church rests in Christ alone. The church reflects Christ's purpose and character, and throughout Scripture, it is clear that the church exists to glorify Him and fulfill His mission on earth.
