How do we know the church should support widows?

Answered in 1 source

The church is called to support widows as part of its duty to care for the vulnerable in the congregation.

The Bible make it clear in 1 Timothy 5:3-10 that the church has a duty to care for widows by showing them honor and support. Paul instructs that only those widows who are genuinely in need should receive this care — specifically, those who have no family to provide for them. Supporting widows is a reflection of true religion and faith, demonstrating the church's commitment to caring for the household of faith. This duty highlights the communal aspect of the church, where everyone looks after each other, particularly the most vulnerable, in adherence to God's command for mercy and compassion.
