How do we know the effectiveness of Old Testament sacrifices?

Answered in 1 source

Old Testament sacrifices pointed to Christ but were ineffective in bringing true atonement for sin, as they were merely types of the ultimate sacrifice.

While the Old Testament sacrificial system was a divinely instituted means of atonement, it was never meant to be the final solution for sin. In Hebrews, it is made clear that the blood of bulls and goats could not take away sins. The repeated nature of these sacrifices was a constant reminder of sin, indicating their temporary and incomplete nature. In contrast, the sacrifice of Christ is portrayed as the only effective atonement, made once and for all, providing permanent reconciliation and cleansing from sin.
