How do we know the gifts of the Holy Spirit have ceased?

Answered in 2 sources

The gifts of the Holy Spirit, including tongues, ceased after the apostles, as they could only be transferred through the laying on of their hands.

According to the sermon, the miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit, such as healing and speaking in tongues, were limited to the time of the apostles. The last apostle died in the first century, marking the end of their ability to impart these gifts to others. For instance, Acts 8:18 illustrates that Simon sought to buy the power of the apostles, which indicates these gifts were unique to them. Post-apostolic claims of these gifts are thus deemed unsubstantiated.
