How do we know the gifts of the Spirit were for a specific time?

Answered in 1 source

The gifts of the Spirit were limited to the early church to authenticate the apostles' message and are not present in the same manner today.

The miraculous gifts of the Spirit, such as speaking in tongues, served an important purpose during the early days of the Church. They were unique to that time and were meant to validate the apostles' teachings about Christ's resurrection and His authority. For example, instances such as Philip preaching to the Samaritans illustrate that the apostles were the only ones authorized to bestow these gifts. The cessation of these gifts has led Reformed theology to conclude that they were meant for a specific period to confirm the Word of God as it was being revealed through the apostles.
