How do we know the gospel is liberating and not legalistic?

Answered in 1 source

The gospel liberates by imparting a new nature that desires to obey God, unlike legalism which enforces rules from the outside.

The gospel's liberating power is evident in how it changes hearts and inclines them toward the will of God. Romans 6:17 explains that genuine obedience comes from the heart, a transformation that only the gospel can achieve. Unlike legalism, which relies on external rules and threatens control, the gospel fosters internal compulsion to follow Christ. Jesus states in John 8:36, 'If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.' This freedom is characterized by true obedience to God, growing from a love for Him rather than from fear of punishment. Therefore, while religion confines, the gospel frees believers to pursue a relationship with God rooted in grace and love.
