How do we know the importance of suffering in the Christian life?

Answered in 2 sources

Suffering is essential in the Christian life as it fosters growth, aligns believers with Christ's experience, and prepares them for eternal glory.

Suffering holds a significant place in the Christian life as it allows believers to share in Christ’s own experiences. Jesus bore the heaviest burden on the cross, not only to redeem humanity but also to show that suffering can have purpose. In carrying one’s own cross, Christians learn perseverance and develop a deeper reliance on Christ’s strength. This principle is affirmed by Paul's teaching in Romans 8:17, where he writes that believers are heirs with Christ, provided they suffer with Him. The very act of suffering becomes a means through which sanctification takes place, refining faith and character.

Moreover, the Bible teaches that while suffering may be temporary, it works within believers an eternal weight of glory (2 Corinthians 4:17). This perspective allows Christians to view their temporary afflictions in light of the eternal joy promised by God. Understanding suffering in this way transforms it from being a mere burden into a tool for spiritual growth and a more profound connection to Jesus, who faced ultimate suffering for their sake.
