How do we know the interpretation of tongues is necessary?

Answered in 1 source

Paul asserts that without interpretation, tongues lack value in building up the church.

In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul insists that the purpose of speaking in tongues is to edify the church. If a person speaks in tongues without the ability to interpret, it serves no purpose for the congregation. Paul states explicitly that if there is no interpreter, the speaker should remain silent (1 Corinthians 14:28). This is because the primary aim of the gathering of believers is to be taught and comforted, and unintelligible speech hinders this goal, making interpretation essential for mutual edification during corporate worship.
