How do we know the work of the Holy Spirit is real?

Answered in 2 sources

The reality of the Holy Spirit's work is evident through the transformation in the believer's life and the resulting fruit of the Spirit.

We can know that the work of the Holy Spirit is real by observing the transformative effects it has in the lives of believers. The presence of the Holy Spirit is marked by the fruit of the Spirit as described in Galatians 5:22-25. When individuals are genuinely regenerated and indwelt by the Spirit, their lifestyles will begin to reflect love, joy, peace, and other fruits that align with God's character.

This transformation is a direct response to the believer's commitment to Christ and is a manifestation of the divine work that God performs in the new man created in Christ Jesus. Such evidence should encourage us to examine our hearts and practices—those who truly belong to Christ will show this fruit in their lives as they walk in the Spirit, striving to live out their faith in daily actions.

Moreover, the activities of the Holy Spirit also include conviction of sin and guidance towards truth. The believer's awareness of sin and the deepened understanding of Scripture are additional confirmations of the Holy Spirit’s activity in their lives. This leading often produces a desire for holiness and a longing to reflect the love of Christ, further attesting to the authenticity of the Spirit’s work.
