How do we know true believers are different from mere professors of faith?

Answered in 1 source

True believers are differentiated by the inner work of the Holy Spirit, which produces genuine faith and obedience, unlike mere outward profession.

True believers, likened to the wise virgins in Matthew 25, have undergone a transformation of the heart through the work of the Holy Spirit. While both true believers and false professors may appear similar outwardly—as they both may attend church, partake in sacraments, and profess faith—only true believers possess the internal oil of grace that sustains their faith and assures their salvation. This internal change manifests in a genuine love and desire for Christ, along with true works of obedience. The foolish virgins, on the other hand, lack this inner transformation and thus ultimately are unprepared for Christ's return. Their outward actions do not stem from a true heart of faith, showing that their profession is superficial.
