How do we know true believers from false professors?

Answered in 2 sources

True believers are marked by the Holy Spirit's indwelling and a genuine love for God and His people, unlike false professors.

The distinguishing factor between true believers and false professors lies in the transformative work of the Holy Spirit. True believers possess a new divine nature that compels them to serve God and the church with authentic commitment. Their lives center around glorifying Christ, reflecting an inward change that is evident through their actions and affections.

Contrarily, false professors fail to embody this divine nature, instead displaying characteristics of self-centeredness and inconsistency in their commitment to Christ. They may outwardly profess love for Christ, yet their lack of genuine spiritual transformation reveals their true nature. The difference ultimately rests on life and death: true believers live because of Christ, while false professors, despite appearances, live for themselves, which leads to spiritual death.
