How do we know we are born of God?

Answered in 12 sources

We know we are born of God by the action of God's seed remaining in us, leading us to do righteousness and to love one another (1 John 3:9).

Being born of God involves a profound transformation evidenced in the believer's life. 1 John 3:9 states that 'whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him.' This divine seed represents the new nature imparted by God, which enables a believer to pursue righteousness. The supernatural love for God and fellow believers also testifies to this new birth (1 John 4:7). Believers demonstrate their identity as children of God not by legalistic obedience but through a sincere, heartfelt response to God's love, resulting in a desire to live righteously and love unconditionally. Thus, our assurance is rooted in the evidence of the Holy Spirit's work within us.
