How do we know we are self-righteous?

Answered in 1 source

Indicators of self-righteousness include keeping an account of good deeds and denying one's need for repentance, as exemplified by the older brother in Luke 15.

Self-righteousness manifests in various ways, primarily through a focus on personal achievements in contrast to others. The older son in the parable of the Prodigal Son is a key example. He says in Luke 15:29, 'These many years do I serve thee,' indicating an unhealthy fixation on his service compared to his brother. This self-reliance breeds a lack of acknowledgement of one's own sin, which is essential for true repentance. Furthermore, a self-righteous individual often judges others' sins while remaining blind to their own, a condition our Lord warned against in Matthew 7:3-5. Therefore, self-examination in light of Scripture is vital for identifying and combating self-righteousness.
