How do we know we need a covenant with God?

Answered in 1 source

We recognize our need for a covenant with God when we understand our sinfulness and inability to save ourselves.

The realization of our need for a covenant with God often comes through an awareness of our own sinfulness and moral failure. Just as the Gibeonites presented themselves as deceitful and without merit, acknowledging our sinful state leads us to plead for God's mercy. Salvation is not about presenting our good works but recognizing that we can only approach God through the covenant of grace. The call for mercy, as expressed in Luke 18:13 by the tax collector, highlights the necessity to come to God as desperate sinners. This consciousness prompts true repentance and a desire for the covenant that assures us of God's faithfulness.
