How do we know who a deceiver is in Christian teaching?

Answered in 1 source

Deceivers can be identified by their denial of essential truths about Christ, particularly His person and work.

John specifically warns that many deceivers have entered the world, particularly those who do not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh (2 John 7). These deceivers may articulate Christ's historical existence but deny His divine nature or His redemptive work. They often twist Scriptures for personal gain, confirming their character as covetous and discordant, much like Diotrephes. Essentially, examining both their doctrine and character is vital, as true believers will affirm Christ's full personhood and redemptive work for His elect. This discernment is necessary to avoid being led astray by subtle errors that deny essential truths of the Gospel.
