How do we understand Peter's doubt?

Peter's doubt is highlighted in Jesus' rebuke, 'O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?' This doubt arose because Peter's views of the Kingdom were not fully aligned with the spiritual reality of Christ's mission, as many Jewish followers of Jesus held onto political notions of the Messiah. In the midst of the storm, when he took his eyes off Jesus, the intimidating power of the wind and waves filled him with fear. This illustrates the human propensity to forget past divine interventions and the character of God. Instead of resting in the knowledge of Christ’s sovereignty and authority, Peter allowed the fears of his circumstances to overrule his faith. Therefore, the lesson we learn is the importance of maintaining focus on Jesus to overcome our doubts, reminding us that faith is fundamentally about the object of our trust.
