How do we understand the role of works in salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Works reflect genuine faith but do not contribute to our justification before God.

In the Reformed understanding, works are essential as the fruit of saving faith, but they play no role in justifying the believer before God. Paul consistently teaches that salvation is entirely by grace through faith, reaffirming that works cannot earn God’s favor. In Galatians 2:16, he argues that if righteousness could be gained through the law, then Christ died for nothing. Therefore, while true faith produces good works in the life of a believer as evidence of transformation (James 2:17), these works serve as confirmation of faith rather than the basis of salvation itself. This perspective protects the grace of God from being distorted by human merits.
