How does Christ end the darkness in His people?

In Matthew 4:16, it is noted that the people who sat in darkness saw a great light, signifying that Christ actively brings spiritual illumination. This is reinforced by 2 Corinthians 4:6, which states that God shines light into our hearts to give us the knowledge of His glory in Christ.
