How does God cause repentance in our hearts?

Answered in 1 source

God causes repentance in our hearts by revealing His goodness and through the work of the Holy Spirit.

According to Scripture, true repentance is a sovereign act of God. As indicated in Jeremiah 31:18-19, it is God who turns the heart, prompting individuals to recognize their sin and seek Him earnestly. This divine initiative is essential because, in our fallen nature, we are powerless to repent on our own. The Holy Spirit works by illuminating our minds to the truth of God’s Word, convicting us of sin, and revealing Christ's righteousness and redemptive work. As we understand God's character and His condescension in grace, we are drawn to repent and turn back to Him in faith. Thus, genuine repentance is a result of God's active work within us, enabling us to respond to His grace.
