How does God's justice relate to forgiveness?

Answered in 1 source

God's justice is satisfied through Christ's atonement, allowing Him to forgive sinners without compromising His holiness.

God’s justice is a fundamental aspect of His character that underpins His forgiveness. In order to forgive, God must uphold His own righteousness, which He fulfills through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. This means that while God extends grace freely to sinners, it is not at the expense of His justice. When we confess our sins, we are relying on the atoning work of Christ, whose blood satisfies God's just requirement for sin. Thus, God can forgive and justify the ungodly without transgressing His character. This interplay of justice and mercy is central to the gospel.
