How does God's mercy relate to judgment?

Answered in 1 source

God's mercy is displayed in His decision to save some while others are left under judgment (Romans 9:22-24).

Romans 9:22-24 presents this profound mystery: 'What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction?' In contrast, the passage continues, 'And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory.' Here, we see that God's mercy and judgment coexist in His divine plan. Those destined for mercy appreciate the magnitude of that grace in light of the judgment deserved. God practicing mercy by electing some while allowing others to harden in their sin reinforces both the justice and grace of His character.
