How does God use trials to bring about repentance?

Answered in 1 source

God uses trials and judgments to humble and bring awareness of sin, yet true repentance only comes through His divine grace.

Though God utilizes trials and judgments as means to awaken conscience and recognize sin, Scripture asserts that judgments themselves do not inherently produce repentance. As illustrated in the account of Pharaoh's response to the plagues, fear and grief can prompt a superficial reaction without genuine heart change. True repentance is a work of the Holy Spirit, leading a person to a saving knowledge of Christ. As stated in Romans 2:4, it is the goodness of God that leads us to repentance, reinforcing that while trials may point us toward God, they must be coupled with the transformative work of His grace to effect true change in our hearts.
