How does God work saving faith in a believer's heart?

Answered in 1 source

God works saving faith through the proclamation of the gospel and the enlightenment of the Spirit.

God’s sovereign grace plays a critical role in how saving faith is cultivated in a believer's heart. There is no prescribed pattern for how this occurs; however, it generally involves the hearing of the gospel and the work of the Holy Spirit in the heart of the individual. Instances such as the Samaritan woman at the well illustrate how God creates an interest in faith and reveals the reality of one's sinfulness and the necessity for a Savior. As individuals encounter God's holiness and their own unworthiness, they become receptive to the gospel message, leading to the emergence of saving faith.
