How does mourning relate to spiritual growth?

Answered in 1 source

Mourning in the spiritual context refers to grieving over sin, which is a necessary step towards comfort and growth in grace.

In the Beatitudes, Jesus states, 'Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted' (Matthew 5:4). This 'mourning' indicates a deep sorrow over sin and the condition of our hearts apart from God. It is this recognition that leads to a greater awareness of our need for Christ and, consequently, His comforting grace. Mourning is an active part of spiritual growth because it prepares the heart to receive hope and restoration from God. When we mourn over our sins and the state of the world, we turn to Christ for comfort, which in turn deepens our relationship with Him and our understanding of His mercy.
