How does one's faith relate to being a son of God?

Answered in 1 source

Faith does not make someone a son of God but reveals that they are already sons, chosen by God (John 1:12-13).

In John 1:12-13, we see that belief in Christ grants us the right to become sons of God, suggesting that our faith acts as evidence of an existing relationship rather than the cause of it. Sovereign grace theology emphasizes that it is God's sovereign will and choice that makes us His children, not our own decision to believe. The act of believing is the response to God's prior action of adoption, through which believers are ultimately assured that they were chosen as His sons long before they came into conscious faith. Thus, the faith we possess underscores our identity as sons rather than serves as a mechanism by which we attain sonship.
