How does regeneration differ from mere reformation?

Answered in 1 source

Regeneration is a divine miracle that involves a complete heart transformation, unlike mere reformation, which can be achieved by human will.

Regeneration is fundamentally different from reformation, which often involves superficial changes to behavior without altering the heart. As preached by Jeremiah, you cannot change the innate characteristics of a person just as an Ethiopian cannot change his skin (Jeremiah 13:23). True regeneration is a miracle that produces the righteousness that God accepts, which is accomplished solely by the Holy Spirit's work. Reformation may involve changing habits and appearances, but it does not address the need for a new heart (Ezekiel 36:26). This divine transformation is necessary for a true relationship with God and to live out one’s faith authentically.
