How does regeneration precede faith in Christian doctrine?

Answered in 1 source

Regeneration is the divine act that enables a person to have faith in Christ.

In sovereign grace theology, regeneration precedes faith because it is through the Holy Spirit's work that we are made alive in Christ before we can respond in faith. This is outlined in John 3:3, where Jesus teaches that one must be born again to see the Kingdom of God. Faith is a response to the divine initiative of God’s effectual calling, not a condition for it. Just as Abraham received the call and responded in faith, believers today experience this effectual calling, which awakens their dead hearts and opens their eyes to the truth of the Gospel. This relationship between regeneration and faith highlights the grace of God, affirming that salvation is a work of God alone and not dependent on human effort.
