How does sanctification work in a Christian's life?

Answered in 1 source

Sanctification works as God sets apart believers for His service, making them holy, and instilling a new nature through the Holy Spirit.

Sanctification is a multifaceted work of God in the life of a believer. It involves setting apart for His holy use, regarding as holy, and an actual transformation into holiness. As stated in the sermon, this sanctifying work is accomplished entirely by God—through the Father’s election, the Son’s sacrifice, and the Holy Spirit’s life-giving power. Believers experience this sanctification as they are recognized as holy before God, yet they will continuously wrestle against their old sinful nature. This inner struggle ultimately shows evidence of God’s sanctifying grace at work within them.
