How does self-righteousness affect our view of salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Self-righteousness perverts our understanding of salvation, leading us to trust in our own works rather than in Christ's atoning sacrifice.

Self-righteousness undermines the essence of salvation by suggesting that we can contribute to our justification before God. It resists the understanding of total depravity, making it difficult to fully grasp that we are completely reliant on God's mercy and grace (Ephesians 2:8-9). The belief that our efforts can earn divine approval challenges the core message of the Gospel that salvation is a free gift from God, received through faith alone. When we cling to self-righteousness, we obstruct the path to true repentance and faith in Christ, essential elements of receiving salvation (Acts 16:31).
