How does self-righteousness manifest in behavior?

Answered in 1 source

Self-righteousness manifests in judgmental attitudes and a lack of compassion towards others, often leading to resentment and anger.

The behavior of self-righteous individuals is characterized by a judgmental outlook and an unwillingness to celebrate the grace extended to others. In the parable of the prodigal son, the elder brother's anger at his father's celebration for the returned wayward son illustrates this well (Luke 15:28-30). The self-righteous are often quick to point out the sins of others, believing they deserve more because they have not engaged in what they perceive as 'serious sin.' This creates a cycle of resentment and an unforgiving spirit. Their focus on others' faults blinds them to their own need for grace, leading to a critical and mean-spirited attitude instead of one of mercy and joy over the work of redemption in others' lives.
