How does the concept of propitiation relate to God's long-suffering?

Answered in 1 source

Propitiation, achieved through Christ's sacrifice, satisfies God's justice and allows Him to be long-suffering towards sinners.

The concept of propitiation is integral to understanding God's long-suffering. According to Romans 3:25, Christ was set forth as a propitiation 'through faith in his blood.' This means that God's wrath against sin has been satisfied through Christ's sacrificial death, which allows Him to remain patient with sinners. Because Christ has taken on the punishment for our sins, God can demonstrate long-suffering without compromising His justice. Therefore, His long-suffering is a reflection of His mercy, rooted in the completed work of Christ on the cross.
