How does the Holy Spirit play a role in the new birth?

Answered in 1 source

The Holy Spirit is instrumental in the new birth as He breathes life into the believer, enabling them to be spiritually alive (John 6:63).

The role of the Holy Spirit in the new birth cannot be overstated. Jesus highlights in John 6:63 that 'it is the Spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing.' This indicates that the Holy Spirit is the agent of regeneration, breathing spiritual life into those who are dead in sin. Moreover, during this process, the Holy Spirit uses the Word of God to articulate the message of salvation and to awaken the heart of individuals. As recorded in Ezekiel 36:26-27, God promises to give a new heart and put a new spirit within the believer, pointing to the transformative work of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the new birth is entirely reliant on the sovereign action of the Holy Spirit.
