How does total depravity affect a person’s ability to believe?

Answered in 1 source

Total depravity denotes that all humans are incapable of believing the gospel without divine intervention because of their sinful nature.

Total depravity is the theological concept that sin has affected every aspect of humanity, leaving individuals unable to respond positively to the gospel on their own. Jesus emphasizes this in John 8:43, stating that the inability to hear His words is due to their nature. Without God's grace to regenerate, every person remains spiritually dead in sin, and thus, cannot comprehend or accept the truth of His Word.
