How does total depravity relate to human responsibility?

Answered in 1 source

Total depravity means that every aspect of humanity is influenced by sin; however, individuals remain responsible for their actions (John 6:44).

Total depravity explains that every faculty of human existence—understanding, will, affections—is under the dominion of sin, making it impossible for individuals to come to God without divine intervention (John 6:44). The sermon conveys that while humans cannot initiate their salvation due to their sinful nature, they are nonetheless responsible for rejecting God's grace. This duality of divine sovereignty and human responsibility is essential in Reformed theology, emphasizing that God's sovereignty does not negate individual accountability. Believers are called to recognize their sinful condition while also acknowledging their responsibility before God, recognizing that inability does not erase their culpability for sin.
