How is faith related to justification?

Answered in 1 source

Faith is the means by which we embrace and rest in the righteousness of Christ, but it is not the basis for justification.

In the context of Reformed theology, faith functions as the instrument through which an individual embraces the righteousness that has been imputed to them through Christ. Justification itself is based on God's declaration and the righteousness of Christ, rather than on the individual's faith. This distinction is crucial; Romans 1:17 emphasizes that 'the just shall live by faith,' suggesting that faith expresses a reliance on what Christ has accomplished rather than being the ground of justification itself. Therefore, while faith is necessary for receiving justification, it is not equated with righteousness. Instead, it is through faith that one acknowledges and rests in the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ, which is the real basis for being justified before God.
