How is faith related to justification in the Bible?

Answered in 1 source

Faith is the means through which believers receive justification, but it itself does not justify them.

In the biblical context, faith and justification are closely linked, yet distinct concepts. Faith is described as the instrument through which we lay hold of the righteousness that is found in Christ (Philippians 3:9). While faith is essential in receiving God's grace, it is not a work that earns justification; rather, it is the acceptance of what Christ has done. Paul emphatically states in Romans 3:28 that we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the Law. Thus, while we are justified through faith, we must recognize that it is solely the merit of Christ that justifies us (Romans 5:1-2). This understanding preserves the glory of God in salvation and protects against any notion that faith itself contributes to our justification.
