How is faith related to unconditional justification?

Answered in 1 source

Faith is the means by which we receive God's gift of unconditional justification, but it itself is not a condition for it.

While faith is indeed central to experiencing justification, it is critical to understand that it is not a work or condition that facilitates justification. According to Romans 3:22, 'even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe,' faith is the instrument through which we are united to Christ and His righteousness. However, true faith is a gift from God, not something we conjure up or earn. As such, Paul makes it clear that our justification is not 'for faith' but 'by faith.' This distinction underscores that while faith is essential in the experience of justification, it does not serve as a precondition or cause, thus supporting the overarching truth of unconditional justification.
