How is Jesus both a sanctuary and a stumbling block?

Answered in 1 source

Jesus is a sanctuary for those who believe, but a stumbling block for those who reject Him.

Isaiah 8:14 signifies that while Jesus is a sanctuary, He simultaneously becomes a stumbling stone and rock of offense to those who disbelieve. This duality encompasses the varied responses to Christ; for believers, He is refuge and strength, while for the unworthy, He represents divine truth that they resist. The cross, as a symbol of Christ’s sacrifice, can be perceived as a foolishness to the world, leading many to trip over the very means of their salvation. Hence, this highlights the urgency for individuals to discern the truth of Christ, without which they may remain constricted in their sins and outside the grace bestowed by His sanctuary.
