How should Christians view the role of afflictions in their lives?

Answered in 1 source

Afflictions are viewed as necessary for spiritual growth, leading to greater reliance on God.

Afflictions play a crucial role in the life of a believer as they serve to wean us from worldly desires and encourage a deeper reliance on Christ. According to 1 Peter 1:6-7, trials test and purify our faith, resulting in praise and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ. The perspective of viewing afflictions as a tool for discipleship leads to a transformative experience where we learn to trust in the sufficiency of Christ in all circumstances. Therefore, rather than viewing suffering through the lens of despair, we can see it as a part of God's sovereign plan for our growth in grace.
