What are false refuges according to the Bible?

Answered in 1 source

False refuges are any trusts in human efforts, traditions, or self-righteousness instead of in Christ alone for salvation.

The concept of false refuges is powerfully illustrated in Isaiah 28:15, where people make covenants with death and hide behind their own lies, thinking they can escape judgment. These false refuges can be religious—such as trust in church membership, rituals, or personal morality—or non-religious, where individuals rely on their own reasoning or self-derived spirituality. However, these will ultimately fail as God's judgment is impartial and based solely on the person and work of Jesus Christ, as the only true refuge.
