What are heresies and why do they exist?

Answered in 1 source

Heresies are choices to deviate from the truth of Scripture, allowed by God to reveal the approved among His people.

Heresies represent a deviation from the faith and a choice to believe falsehoods over the truth of God's word. In 1 Corinthians 11:19, Paul states that heresies must exist so that those who are approved can be revealed. This divine allowance serves a purpose in God's sovereign plan, providing a contrast between the genuine and the false. Heresy stems from man's sinful inclination to choose error over truth. It highlights the necessity of divine grace in securing the faith of believers, for an individual does not choose to believe the truth on a whim; rather, true belief is a response to the revealed truth of God (Romans 1:18-20).
