What can hinder a Christian's forgiveness?

Answered in 1 source

Bitterness, anger, and pride can hinder a Christian's ability to forgive others.

Several factors can inhibit a Christian's capacity to forgive, the most significant being bitterness and anger. Ephesians 4:31-32 warns against allowing these negative feelings to take root, as they grieve the Holy Spirit and obstruct our own experience of God's forgiveness. Pride can also play a pivotal role, as it may lead individuals to feel justified in their grievances and unwilling to let go of their sense of being wronged. Furthermore, failing to remember the magnitude of our own sins and God's forgiveness towards us can make it difficult to extend grace to others. Ultimately, understanding God's overwhelming mercy towards us—as illustrated in various biblical passages—should drive us to forgive others, regardless of the nature or size of the offense.
