What does being unclean before God mean for believers?

Answered in 1 source

Being unclean before God means recognizing our complete sinfulness and inability to be acceptable to Him without a mediator.

Isaiah's declaration of being 'undone' and a 'man of unclean lips' (Isaiah 6:5) illustrates the understanding of human sinfulness in contrast to God's holiness. This acknowledgment is crucial because it reveals our desperate need for divine grace. Before we can receive pardon, we must first see ourselves as truly unworthy and undeserving of God's favor. The good news of the Gospel is that, in Christ, our unclean state is addressed through His atoning work, allowing believers to be washed clean. His righteousness covers us, making us acceptable before God (Ezekiel 16:8). This truth reminds us to rely solely on Christ for our justification rather than our own efforts.
