What does Ecclesiastes teach about work and labor?

Answered in 1 source

Ecclesiastes highlights that while labor is often toil and sorrow, it is also a gift from God to enjoy.

Ecclesiastes provides a sobering view of human labor, describing it as often characterized by vanity and vexation of spirit (Ecclesiastes 2:17). The wise Preacher reflects on the futility of toil for personal gain, understanding that it ultimately leads to a cycle of dissatisfaction. However, he simultaneously acknowledges that work can be a source of joy when aligned with God’s will, as he writes that 'there is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor' (Ecclesiastes 2:24). This duality emphasizes that while earthly work may be frustrating, it is a good and gracious gift from God, allowing us to find pleasure in life’s daily activities under His sovereign reign.
