What does God's holiness mean in relation to the atonement?

Answered in 1 source

God's holiness means that He cannot overlook sin, and the atonement satisfies His justice through Christ's sacrifice.

God's holiness reflects His complete otherness and moral purity, which cannot tolerate sin. This attribute is crucial in understanding the necessity of the atonement: because God is holy, He demands justice for sin. The slaughtering of sacrificial lambs in the Old Testament foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice of Christ, who alone is sufficient to bear the sins of humanity. As noted in Romans 3:26, God is both just and the justifier of those who believe in Jesus. By pouring out His wrath upon Christ on the cross, God remains just while forgiving sinners, thus demonstrating His holiness through the provision of atonement. Therefore, the atonement is not only an act of love but is crucially tied to His holy character.
