What does Hebrews teach about the role of Old Testament sacrifices?

Answered in 1 source

Hebrews teaches that Old Testament sacrifices were merely shadows pointing to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

The role of Old Testament sacrifices is clearly defined in Hebrews as being types and shadows of the true and perfect sacrifice, which is Jesus Christ. Hebrews 10:1 states that the law contained only a shadow of good things to come, but cannot make the worshippers perfect. These sacrifices served a purpose in that they pointed to the forthcoming reality of Christ's atoning work (Hebrews 10:4). Each offering was a temporary measure, serving to exemplify the need for true redemption. The culmination of God's redemptive plan comes through Christ, whose sacrifice abolishes the need for further offerings, as He completed the work needed for our salvation.
