What does it mean that Christ is the substance behind the Old Testament sacrifices?

Answered in 1 source

Christ is the substance that the Old Testament sacrifices foreshadowed, ultimately fulfilling their purpose.

In the context of biblical sacrifice, the Old Testament rituals served as a shadow of the reality that would come through Christ. As stated in Hebrews 10:1, the law was a shadow but not the reality itself. The substance, or perfect fulfillment of these sacrifices, is Jesus Christ, who came to do the will of God. His sacrifice is the complete and final offering that perfects us, rendering the old sacrificial system obsolete. Believers are no longer under the law but are now invited to partake in the grace provided through Christ's completed work.
