What does it mean that Christ is the surety of the covenant?

Answered in 3 sources

Christ being the surety means He guarantees the promises of the New Covenant by undertaking the responsibility for our salvation.

As the surety of a better covenant, Christ assumes the obligation to fulfill the requirements of the law on behalf of sinners. Hebrews 7:22 and 1 John 4:10 reveal that He became the sacrificial substitute, honoring God's law and meeting the just demands of God's justice through His death. This assurance provides believers with confidence in their salvation, knowing that their acceptance before God is not based on their works but upon Christ's perfect sacrifice and righteousness. Therefore, the New Covenant, guaranteed by Christ as surety, assures eternal life and a secure position in God's grace.
