What does it mean that we are unable to cleanse ourselves?

Answered in 1 source

It means that humans cannot attain righteousness or cleanse sin on their own; we need Christ's redemption.

The message of our inability to cleanse ourselves is vividly illustrated through the leper's condition. Just as the leper could do nothing to cure his leprosy, we too are incapable of rectifying our sinful state. This inability underscores a central tenet of Reformed theology: humanity's complete reliance on Christ for salvation. Our sinful nature prevents us from performing any act sufficient for atonement; therefore, we must turn to Christ, who alone has the power to cleanse and save. This truth is foundational in understanding the need for grace in the life of every believer.
