What does it mean to add to or take away from God's word?

Answered in 1 source

To add to or take away from God's word is to distort the truth of scripture, which risks one’s place in the book of life.

In Revelation 22:19, the seriousness of altering God's word is highlighted by the warning that those who do so will face dire consequences. This serves as a caution against human arrogance in addition to or omitting parts of God's revelation. Christians are called to submit to the entirety of God's word, acknowledging that it is sufficient for faith and practice. The danger in taking away is that it reflects a heart that does not fully trust in God's sovereign grace and relies instead on personal interpretation or works, which can ultimately lead to their declaration as unfaithful in God's sight.
